The Birth of Dirt

Northern California bicycle enthusiast and author Frank Berto comes to the US Bicycling Hall of Fame on Sunday Feb 5th to give a presentation about the birth of mountain biking in Marin county California. The talk will run from 2-3PM; Mr Berto will be available afterward to sign books. He plans on bringing copies of the "Birth of Dirt" and "The Dancing Chain" to sell.

Frank Berto is a retired engineer and was for 10 years, the Engineering Editor for Bicycling magazine.  He's written 3 cycling books "Bicycling Magazine’s Complete Guide to Upgrading Your Bike", "The Dancing Chain: History and Development of the Derailleur Bicycle and "The Birth of Dirt; Origins of Mountain Biking". Whether you are a hard core mountain bike enthusiast or not, the tales of Joe Breeze, Otis Guy, Tom Ritchey, Charlie Cunningham and Charlie Kelley are sure to entertain. Beginning with modified cruisers, and then developing purpose built mountain bikes, Frank Berto will describe how it was the efforts of these pioneers that directly led to a NEW category of bicycling: Mountain Biking.
