2012 San Juan Islands Tour

— filed under:

After a six-year hiatus, Davis Bike Club is returning to an ever-popular tour of the San Juan, Vancouver, and Salt Spring Islands in Washington and British Columbia. As a fixed-base format, rides will vary from the short-easy-flat to the long-mountainous -- something for everybody. Our hubs will be Sidney, BC and Friday Harbor, WA.

SanJuan1We will meet in Anacortes, the main town on Fidalgo Island, WA on Saturday, July 29th. Our motel will let us store bicycle cases or park cars for the nine days. If you fly, a shuttle from the Seattle airport can drop you at the motel. Amtrak service is nearby on the mainland; the tour leaders can arrange to meet the train. Early arriving members may do an interesting loop around Fidalgo Island.

Sunday morning, after a five-mile bike commute to the Washington State DOT Ferry terminal we sail to Sidney, on Vancouver Island, BC. From this base for the next three days, we can tour on a bike trail to the very-British city of Victoria (21 mi one way,) on back roads to the famous Butchart Gardens (10 mi one way,) or on BC Ferries to the Salt Spring Islands.

SanJuan2On Wednesday, we sail to Friday Harbor, on San Juan Island, WA, our base for the next four days. Numerous bike-tour options around San Juan Island visit sites commemorating the American-British conflict. Inter-island ferry service to Orcas Island supports a ride out and back to Eastsound with more riding available to the 2400-ft vista atop Mt. Constitution. The rural Lopez and Shaw Islands afford gently rolling tour choices for yet another day. On Sunday, August 5th we sail back to Anacortes.

Sidney and Friday Harbor lodgings are right at the ports, so no luggage van is needed. Island villages have numerous good restaurants near our hotels. The budget, about $550 per person double occupancy, includes eight night’s hotels, some meals, and carriage of luggage to and from the port in Anacortes. Club members will pay their own WSDOT fares (discounted 50% for 65+,) most meals, and incidentals. Passports are now required for travel to and from Canada. Tour leaders are Marilyn and Bruce Dewey, deweyms@hotmail.com.
