First Aid Kits To Get a Makeover

Last year before the Davis Double I was thinking about the first aid kits that I had used several times during different events. I was thinking about the rust in the steel toolboxes and the trays that were all battered and worn. My thoughts recalled several supplies that were crushed in the bottom stained with Betadine and in disarray. I hesitated to ask if we could possibly update the first aid boxes because I knew that I would probably be doing it myself since I had the idea. I asked anyway and was given the opportunity to completely update the boxes.

I started by emptying all the boxes and throwing away anything expired or stained. I then purchased new first aid hard plastic boxes that were used by paramedics on ambulances, they might not last as long as the steel toolboxes but they would be clean and easy to organize supplies in since they were twice as big as the steel boxes.

I purchased new supplies and made all the necessary updates to the boxes and they went out to be used for the first time during the Davis Double Century event. After that event and during that event, I received several comments on the contents of the boxes. I welcomed the comments and the updates on what was needed in the first aid kits over and above what I had placed in them.

Two weeks ago at the first March Madness committee meeting, I had the opportunity to meet Jack Berger, retired ER physician and DBC member. In speaking with Jack, I realized that he had some really good ideas about the first aid kits and when he offered to go through each one and really get all the necessary supplies into them, it was like a dream come true.

Jack has gone above and beyond to put together a list of items that needs to be in each box as well as what can be placed in a bag that is attached to the box so that the box has enough room for all the supplies. I wanted to thank Jack for all his hard work and although none of us wants to have something happen to them during an event, it is comforting to know that we have all the necessary supplies in the first aid kits and we are fully prepared. Jack has even placed some information on treatment of abrasions/road rash and information on medications in each first aid kit. These info cards will be printed out on 5x7 paper and laminated to be placed in each box for easy reference for any rest stop worker.

If we are prepared for the worst, the worst usually stays away and we are definitely prepared when it comes to first aid boxes.
