Follow the money: Philanthropy annual report

— filed under:

Each year, the Davis Bike Club board of directors dedicates a portion of the club's annual budget to philanthropy. As this year's philanthropy director, it's been my responsibility to distribute the $6,000 in this year's budget.

Here, briefly, is where the money went:

A portion of this year's philanthropy budget supported 18 DBC members who participated in fund-raising rides for such organizations as NorCal AIDS Cycle, AIDS LifeCycle, and the Tour de Cure (diabetes research).  Each rider's organization received $100 donated by DBC in the name of the club member.

Another nonprofit organization receiving support was Camp Kesem, a UC Davis student-run summer camp program for Davis and Sacramento area children ages 6-13 who have or have had a parent diagnosed with cancer. The children attend camp free of charge. DBC donated 200 water bottles with the Camp Kesem logo to this year's campers.

Davis Community Cable received a $250 donation in recognition of their help with our Web site, and the club made a $250 donation to the US Bicycling Hall of Fame for the use of its facilities for our monthly member meetings. And as has been our custom for a number of years, the following Davis and Yolo County nonprofits each received a $200 donation:

American Red Cross of Yolo County

Davis Community Meals

Davis Food Coop, for the annual Holiday Meal

Food Bank of Yolo Co.

Habitat for Humanity

Meals on Wheels

Putah Creek Council

Sexual Assault & Domestic Violence Center

STEAC

Tulyome

Yolo Hospice

Yolo Land Trust

Yolo Wayfarer Center

As this issue of Changing Gears is going to press (to electron arrangement?), $500 remains in the 2011 philanthropy budget. My goal is to make sure those funds find a good home. There are more than enough worthy endeavors to support. If you know of a local group that you think could use a little extra at this time of year, please let me know. An email to philanthropy@davisbikeclub.org, describing the organization's goals, will help me to distribute the funds.

Every dollar donated by your bike club has as its source you, our members. The events the club puts on—Foxy's Fall Century, the Double Century, the brevets, the Gold Rush Randonee—would not be possible without the hours of dedicated volunteer effort contributed by you. That commitment to quality is what keeps riders from as far away as New York, Canada, and even Europe, returning year after year to participate in a Davis Bike Club event. So when you're out at a rest stop slicing oranges for 700 riders, or corner marshaling in the wee hours, or checking riders in the night before the Double Century, or standing in the rain, in the dark, at a 400K brevet control, remember that it's your time and your commitment to your bike club that helps our community's nonprofits to help others.

It's been my privilege to serve as your philanthropy director this past year. Jack Berger is the nominee for 2012, and I'm confident he'll improve on the goals of previous philanthropy directors. Please welcome him to the board and offer him the generous support you have given me.
