In Town Replacement for Double Century Eyed

The Davis Bike Club announced today that a replacement ride for the traditional route to the Davis Double Century had been devised. "It's a little different but we'll be breaking new ground," said club president Stuart Bresnick. We're excited about being able to offer what will be the most unusual double century in California history.

Imagine 1,000 riders coming toward you at the start of the CPDC!
The "College Park Double" will loop 444 times around the prestigous College Park neighborhood just north of the University of California Campus in Davis. "Yes, it's flat but it is shady and given the high temperatures we've seen in past DC rides that will be important," said Robin Neuman, CPDC director. "We'll be able to scale back a lot on rest stops. In fact there will be a single facility serving the entire ride. Helen Tomson's yard will be our break site with live music provided during the latter parts of the race by the Putah Creek Crawdads. The only difficulty involves break facilities. Riders will have to leave the course and use the Hickey Gym facilities."

New technology will also play a role in the CPDC. "All riders will be chipped," said Ms. Neuman. "We'll track them to help each rider keep track of where they are in their search for 200 miles. We got a fabulous deal on RFID chips from the vet school. A simple sub-cutaneous injection will slip the chip under the rider's skin on the back of his neck. The Vet School has offered fifty vet school students to help with this procedure. It should go quit quickly and only stings for a short time."

Mr. Bresnick noted that a newly formed offshoot of NASCAR, NASBIKE, was interested in a wider media distribution of the CPDC. "Oval racing for bikes on a street circuit! It couldn't be better. We're working with our partner: ESPN8, "Das Ocho" to telecast part of the ride. The opportunities for drama with up to 1,000 riding the .45 mile oval are too good to pass up. The carnage could be really quite wonderful!"
