Over seventy solemn DBCers assembled in Davis on Saturday, September 4 to ride respectfully to Winters, commemorating the many contributions to our community of Dr. Bruce S. Winder. Bruce and his wife Ellen were struck by a RV near Quebec City, Canada on July 28, as they were riding in this summer’s DBC Quebec Tour.  Well known as one of Davis’s most avid cyclists, Bruce commuted every day from Davis to Sacramento where he carried on toxicology research for the State of California. Bruce and his wife Ellen Winder were frequent participants in club rides and events. Recently, Bruce served on the DBC board of directors as membership chairman.

Ellen, who is recovering rapidly from multiple fractures, was at Steady Eddy’s in Winters meeting friends. Since she is a Winters teacher, many other local friends joined the group. Belinda Wensel, owner of Steady Eddy’s Coffeehouse was ready with extra coffee and extra tables on the porch. Her daughter and co-owner, Karen Lyons, made a great poster about Bruce.

The “Remember Bruce” ride was planned and led by Steve Kahn, and Marilyn and Bruce Dewey. A DBC memorial fund for Bruce Winder has been established, where contributions are being received from Bruce’s and Ellen’s coworkers, friends, and especially from DBC members. The family intends to direct the funds to improve cycling safety. DBCers may contribute to the “Dr. Bruce Winder Memorial Fund” in care of Stu Bresnick, 409 Heron Place, Davis, CA 95616.
