The family of Ed “Foxy Grandpa” Delano would once again like to extend their thanks to the Davis Bike Club for keeping Foxy’s Fall Century going in memory of our Father, Grandfather, and Great Grandfathe

For any newcomers out there who do not know the history, Foxy Grandpa started riding at the age of 58. He is probably best known for the trek he made in the early 70’s. Foxy, 75 years at the time, made a 3,100 mile journey from Davis, CA to Worcester, MA for his 50th reunion of Worcester Polytechnic Institute. It took Foxy 33 ½ days. He arrived scruffy but in great health.

In the mid 1970s, doctors and other fitness magazines put Foxy to the test to try to figure out how a man in his mid- to late-70s could be in such great physical shape. We would like to say it's mostly good genes, but we all know most of it was grandpa’s dedication to the sport he loved. The genes have definitely been passed on though; Colonel Ed Delano, Jr., has also become an amazing athlete in his late 70s. In fact, you should see him out on the ride this year. He looks just like his father (Foxy). Ed Jr. and three other riders out of Sacramento (The Fab Four) made some of their own history in 2001. The four riders, all averaging 70 in age, left Santa Cruz, CA, on May 5, 2001, and arrived in Bar Harbor, Maine on August 8, 2001. Ed Jr.’s ride took longer, but they also rode a total of 4,004 miles and climbed 93,000 feet. As you can see, Foxy passed his good health onto his so

Foxy Grandpa passed on January 13th, 1997 at the age of 91. Foxy’s incredible wife, Rosemond, who was at his side supporting him through every ride he ever went on, passed away after in 2003. While Foxy’s son is out on the ride, his daughters Joy and Joanna will be at the ride this year displaying some of his memorabilia and are available to respond to any questions you might have about Foxy. Again, thank you DBC. We appreciate the dedication of this ride and hope that it continues to inspire many riders, young and old.
