50 Bikes for 50 Kids

An interesting volunteer opportunity to help assemble bikes.

The North Natomas TMA is creating a new event this year, 50 Bikes for 50 Kids!  On Monday, January 21, 2013, Martin Luther King Jr. Day and the National Day of Service, community volunteers will join forces in North Natomas to help 50 kids transform bike parts into 50 ready-to-ride bicycles.

50 Bikes for 50 Kids is a community service event that matches 50 well-deserving youth with teams of volunteers to assemble a bike for each child on the team. These “volunteer engineers” hail from local community organizations and businesses, and range from bike enthusiasts to mechanical novices. Prior to the event, volunteers attend a class taught by professional bicycle mechanics in order to learn how to construct a bike. The mentors pass this knowledge onto the youngsters who then help assemble the bike and get valuable hands-on experience on teamwork, building and the construction of a bicycle.

Bike recipients are nominated by local youth organizations based on a demonstration of the “Six Pillars of Character” by the Josephson’s Institute: “Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring and Citizenship.”

United, the volunteers are able to give local youth the gift of healthy recreation that encourages both sustainable transportation and a better future -- for the young recipients and the community as a whole.

50 Bikes for 50 Kids is now recruiting for the following volunteer roles:

Bike Builders:  Volunteers will assist bike recipients with the assembly of their bicycles, act as a mentor, and ensure safety at all times.  Knowledge in bike mechanics is helpful but not necessary, we will train you!  1 ½ hour time commitment.

Bike Mechanics:  Volunteers will assist bike building teams throughout the assembly process.  Knowledge in bike mechanics is necessary.  6 hour time commitment.

Bike Recipients Check-in:  Volunteers orient bike recipients on the day’s schedule, bike building time, and distribute t-shirts.  3 hour time commitment.

Volunteer Check-in:  Volunteers will orient bike building volunteers to the event, answer questions, monitor teams that have arrived, distribute t-shirts, and team packets.  5 hour time commitment.

General Event Support:  Volunteers needed to assist with set-up, clean-up, helmet fittings, photography, and more.  Varied time commitments.

I am hoping you will share this volunteer opportunity with your members and in your newsletter.  I look forward to hearing from you and hope you will join us in our endeavor.  This has promise to be a popular annual event, one that promotes excitement in community and good health.  Thank you for your consideration!
