Membership - changes

Over the past couple years, things have changed a little bit and Adam Bridge, your friendly DBC Newsletter Editor suggested I write up something about Membership.

DBC Race Team Skilz Training Rides

Nothing like the looming of one’s 50th birthday to kick start a fitness goal! For me that goal was to get more serious about cycling.

Winters Road Race August 27, 2011 Men’s Cat 4 45+

What a day. My car wouldn't go into reverse so I let it coast out of the driveway. Then I found out it wouldn't go into 1st, 3rd, 5th or reverse so that leaves 2nd and 4th to get to Winters from Davis. Now to be honest I have other cars but my stuff was already loaded in the 1974 BMW turd brown Bavaria. I made it in with no more problems, registered, warmed up and was sitting on the start staging area when Jeff Slaton pointed out a goat head in my rear tire. Pull it out with a “Psss,” race over to the turd mobile and quickly change the tube and back to the start in time for my race.

The Great Flume Mountain Bike Race

I'll start with a powerful lesson I learned from race #5; The Kirkwood XC: I finished that race but had to be carted off in an ambulance and get 2 units of IV to bring me back from the brink. The week leading up to the race was very out of routine for me (work and prepping for weekend events), and I believe I started the race somewhat dehydrated and low on electrolytes. Also, I was drinking plain water and Cytomax during the race, which wasn't nearly replacing the electrolytes I was losing. Lesson learned.

Half off US Bicycling Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony Tickets

By virtue of the relationship between the Davis Bike Club and the US Bicycling Hall of Fame, it is possible to purchase half price tickets to this years Induction Ceremony to be held at 7PM on Nov 5, Freeborn Hall, UC Davis. That brings the price down from $100 to $50 each.

Paris Brest Paris (1200 k) August 21-25, 2011

Paris Brest Paris (PBP) was originally a professional race organized in 1891 and was then ridden every 10 years. At that time it went from Paris, west through Brittany, to Brest and back. The route has changed some over the years. While no longer a race (nudge, nudge, wink, wink) it is still organized and offered every four years by the French cycling club, Audax Club Parisien (ACP). It is the oldest cycling event still held.

Winters Criterium September 18, 2011 Men’s Cat 3 1st place

The Winters course was a lot of fun. It has a smooth wide corners fast course. The promoters did a wonderful job putting this event on. Also, nothing better than putting on a Race for a great cause: the registration proceeds support Winters Education Foundation.
